  1. There are many gold-pegged cryptocurrencies already, but more are due to come.

IMHO they are just a fad and as mentioned jumping on the bandwagon, there is no utility to them at all. Why trust one of the many operators instead of say the Royal Mint's vault storage, they offer bullion at or near spot and store for you right? this is no different.

@SovereignSaurus Again I don't feel like it would be any different, you are still trusting a third party not to operate a fractional reserve, would you really trust a company over a government, aren't they just the same? 😄

Blockchain itself is and will change the world, the utility potential is mind blowing that many cannot even comprehend. All of these meme coins and games etc are just a part of the process, they will not survive of course but they don't need to, they are testing vehicles in a way.

Can we have a “withdrawn” or similar tag on the sales forum please @Shaun ?

new tags look great by the way. If each tag could have a different colour it would make it a bit quicker to flick through when it gets busy in there?

    Yes I'll add that.

In fact "prefixes" are an extension of the default "tags", and by default anyone can create a tag and use it, but I've removed that functionality for now in favour of a specified list that we can just build out.

I looked into colouring them, it isn't possible with core but is possible with a paid extension, so can look at add that also in the coming weeks.

  3. Wow please do name and shame! Shocking to see that listed good condition and really not your mistake...

But for sure this is as your describe, it's very clear to be honest. I love my varieties but I'm not familiar with pre-victoria but this is in the ref just without images as of yet: https://thegoldsovereign.com/coin/1102/1826-george-iv-gold-sovereign-london-6-over-small-6

A real shame it's a details coin to be honest 😞. I may have to trouble you for some excellent images with a proper lens if that's possible to use in the reference?

In terms of price I can't see it being that much because of the condition, I mean it's a 4-500quid coin without the variety so maybe 6-700 but I don't think I would pay over 400 for a cleaned coin personally.

  4. I was having a discussion about this today and thought I was ask here to see if I'm missing something.

I am a big proponent of blockchain technology, the problems it does and can solve. However I cannot stand products being created for the sake of a buzzword. I believe gold-pegged cryptocurrencies are exactly that, or am I missing something here?

The so called benefits are cost of storage, ease of transfer and trade. Though you can easily trade paper gold already, don't have to own physical if you don't wish to. With gold-pegged cryptocurrency you still have third party risk as you don't actually own anything in my opinion unless it's in your possession.

So what problem does this solve exactly?

  5. So I've updated the ranks to be a little more on topic, please let me know if I've missed any!

As you can see I will also add images for each coin type, a fair bit of time needed for that though but will look better than the default icons even though you can't truly see the coins themselves, worth it?

Good question. I don’t know. Here is what I can see for the GV London issues:

Looks like you muddled up 1914 with 1915, those pop reports are now more aligned 🙂

I see. So when people are talking about date fillers and gap fillers they'll likely upgrade to a better example when the opportunity arises.

I imagine a full modern date run would look incredible all layed out

It all comes down to budget I think, do what makes sense for your budget and take it as far as you can over time 🙂

The more you collect the more you will learn and want to better your collection in the long run, that was my experience any way!

    Hello!

I am looking for an MS66 1914 half. There are only two with PCGS (one sold at Coin Cabinet last year for £600.00) but there are seven with NGC so I am hoping someone knows of one that could be available!

This is for my own collection.

    Cheers,

    Andrew.

    Andrew,

I've often seen some wild pop reports over at NGC, do you think there is any chance this is wrong? I don't often see the ratio so high, especially with top pop or high grade coins

  10. What level does everyone feel is good for image size? As big as possible would obviously be ideal but storage has to be a consideration at some point.

I feel like this topic's image shows it needs to be bigger, when you click on it or open in tab you still cannot see the slab labels well.

I always found him quite friendly and accomodating.

How do you ship expensive coins over to the States Shaun?

I guess my discussions have been on a different topic to yours which is likely where he cannot be bothered. Things like sending in my labels for population removal, and discussions about my reference etc.

I use International courier to send coins to the states just like anyone else 🙂

Id agree with Steve, ive always found Jamie to be friendly and helpful. However its is a shame if he’s leaving. I have noticed he doesn't pick up emails anymore and Oduwa does what he did (and ive also found her to be excellent, she is recent recruit I think).

If PCGS want UK business, they need to open a UK office imo

I've spoken with the now president about this and it is on their roadmap, but it has to be cost effective right, they were considering using a dealer in the UK but I've said imho is a very bad idea.

They need to find someone trustworthy to pay a salary to, that will handle the processing of 1000s of coins, plus pay for premises rent in a central london location. Where is the money in doing this? It's probably why NGC UK is falling apart at the moment, the job cannot be fun or easy it's basically just painful admin and I doubt you'd fancy as a business hiring someone in another country on 20k/yr to handle that many coins!

  12. So I hear through the grapevine that Jamie is leaving at Christmas. I've never seen eye to eye with him, he has always been quite rude and never cared about coins or helping collectors, possibly due to the fact that comics are his thing not coins.

I hear his replacement could be a downgrade not an upgrade, which could be quite worrying for those using NGC in the UK.

Get your coins over the PCGS in the states guys!

Anybody who knows my posts on TSF will know my views on Covid.

Mike this isn't going to end, although if this Omicron variant is all they say it is, it means the pandemic should be over. These coronaviruses mutate to a situation where they become more infectious but less dangerous, to a point where thay become endemic and just another cold like virus.

However, the powers that be will not let it end.

Anyway, I think this topic belongs on TSF and I'm going to leave it here.

I am no expert but I had the same thoughts about this new variant, its a great thing yet not a single mention of that fact.

We need more dominant and less deadly strain and now we have it, but lock it all down!! 🤭

Grading is not for me, but I appreciate that others want / need it.

I do agree with @Shaun above that Sovereigns should not be touched under the guise of conservation / restoration.  History tells us that other non numismatic restoration with the benefit of time and hindsight has ruined artefacts.

This is an interesting point, how can we know the effect of the chemicals used in this processes in 10 or 20 years time? It is worrying that 100s of coins may be ruined just so NGC can make an extra few quid.

Speaking personally, if they simply had an office in the UK, preferably Midlands somewhere, I would use them exclusively. Even if it were just an agent of some sort, so long as I could easily drop off either in person or by post and the coins were insured both ways as NGC offer.

Do NGC actually cover transit of a 50k coin?

For me popping coins in the post is worth the benefit of every area of service being better, I am very happy I went with PCGS over NGC and it was a big decision to make at the time

PCGS without a doubt maintain the census and database so much better, and I am very envious of it. I've just been looking through it again from that link you posted to one of your sets. The presentation and categorisation of the coins is superb, very impressive. NGC would have a long way to go to even come near it. It's to the point that I can't understand why NGC haven't done something about it. NGC are too willing to accept / create a new variety just because one submitter puts something specific on a coin submission where another submitter doesn't although they may be the same and belong in the same place. So you can have a coin that is single finest / top pop, in reality it can be one of many. They just don't consider it I think when they grade, it would be a mammoth job to unwind it now if they even wanted to.

I appreciate the point that its about the coin, but if i'm putting it into a case it is important to me that it looks at it best, I do understand though that this doesn't add anything other than a visual. Im at a point where i'm considering my own label 😅 which is an utter waste of money but that will be for coins that won't see the market again for some time and for my enjoyment.

It is easy to work with NGC in London to be fair, they are a helpful bunch and you can have a 1 to 1 business friendly relationship with them in London, but maybe it's the same with PCGS. I can also drop off by hand or send by SD and they are there quick, it feels safer / easier anyway. They also rely on the US to grade which 'should' give some continuity, at least the graders have gone through the same school. I do have a problem with PCGS and that they don't have a UK office and that they grade in both the US and Paris and I'm not convinced they both grade in the same way or with he same approach / care, which to my mind anyway devalues the good work globally, that they do in the US.

Don't get me wrong, I know both companies get it wrong and there are outliers, but generally speaking they are there or there about the same I think. It could be just my experience but I have had some very generously graded PCGS proofs, especially on the older sovereigns and I have assumed, rightly or wrongly that these have been done in Paris.

If I wasn't OCD about the slabs being the same and just wanted the highest grades and not necessarily the right grades, I would send my modern proofs to NGC and my older proofs to PCGS Paris.

This post was longer than I expected 😅... best do some proper work!

Yes NGC have created a mess, a false market for many "so called" varieties because they are too lazy. They refuse to listen to people like me. I've put a lot of effort into this reference to hopefully remove the confusion with regards to varieties, PCGS have been very open regarding it but NGC rude and dismissive to be quite frank.

Yea the software is amazing, this is a WIP but really quite cool, digital albums https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/europe/great-britain/british-victoria-sovereign-date-set-circulation-strikes-1838-1901/album/191325

PCGS have been super welcoming to the reference being created here, as it actually improves upon existing. I'm speaking with the software lead and we are on the same page with creating features better for the collector, not for money, which seems to ruin so many other areas of the industry.

I only grade in the US with PCGS, I found that any coins I purchased on the open market that were graed Paris were as you say overgraded, they like to give MS62 to all shields for example regardless of the coin!. This is well known though and luckily the cert numbers are different so easy to spot, at least they were at the beginning.

I think what matters to each collector changes through their journey, but I honestly feel that when you get towards the pinnacle of Sovereign collecting that you'll want to be with PCGS. It won't be long now before they have UK offices or even graders, I've had discussions with the now president about this and they want to make it happen but it has to be profitable with them. I really hope they do not use a dealer for the service (which is on the table), but do it themselves.
